Meet The Trainers

Adam May (Partner) MA(Hons), ADHP(NC), MNRHP

Adam is an experienced training consultant working mainly for not-for-profit organisations and local authorities. In addition to his training work, Adam has a successful psychotherapy practice on Anglesey in North Wales where he lives. His areas of particular expertise are: The Voluntary Sector and volunteering; Communication Skills in a Medical Setting; Middle Management in Education; Diversity; Working in teams and facilitating groups.

 

Voluntary and Not-for-Profit Experience

Adam has a wide experience of the voluntary sector having been a volunteer himself, managed volunteers, and trained volunteer managers. He has volunteered with The Winged Fellowship Trust, Adult Literacy, Chester Aid To The Homeless, Talking Books For The Blind, Gay Switchboard, Camphill Village Trust, Amnesty International, Campaign Coffee and Third World First. He managed volunteers for a disability charity, an NHS summer play scheme and Community Service Volunteers. Adam was an associate trainer for the National Centre for Volunteering (now Volunteering England) for over ten years and Lead Tutor for the University of Wales Higher Education Certificate in Volunteer Management And The Voluntary Sector course between 2002 and 2005. The course ran in both Cardiff and Bangor. Adam has written training materials for University College, Lampeter, Community service Volunteers, and The National Trust. He was Series Consultant for the BBC2 Voluntary Matters Three TV series and he writes regularly for Volunteering Online Magazine. He developed the assessment materials and assessment workbook for the Lantra Awards Level Three Certificate in Volunteer Management.

Health Service Training

Adam delivers courses in Communication Skills in a Medical Setting for health service staff, including Breaking Bad News, and courses in Management Skills for teacher-managers. He has been involved in providing Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) training for NHS staff.

Diversity and Inclusion

Adam has written extensively on the subject of diversity. As a result of his involvement in the DEEP Project sponsored by the Welsh Development Agency he has written a short pamphlet "Thinking About Diversity And Equality". His Martians and Tree Huggers diversity awareness exercise has been used by many agencies including a police force; local authority, and The Samaritans.

Education

Adam has offered the AM Training Management in Education Seminars since 2001.

Psychotherapy and Supervision Skills

Adam's psychotherapy skills complement his training. He is able to assist staff groups with team working and group facilitation. Adam provides individual supervision, both telephone/Skype and face to face. He has supervised people working in volunteer management, healthcare management, and youth and community work, as well as counsellors and psychotherapists.
As well as teaching Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy skills through AM Training, Adam has been an Associate Lecturer teaching CBT for the Department of Psychology at University College, Chester.

Qualifications

Adam is a BABCP registered Cognitive-Behavioural Psychotherapist. He is a Licensed Practitioner of Human Social Functioning; holds a University of Dundee Masters degree with Honours in English and Psychology; a Certificate in Youth and Community Work Supervision; and a Postgraduate Certificate in CBT Supervision.

Neil Irving (Associate Trainer)

Neil Irving has provided training and consultancy to voluntary and community organisations for over 15 years, particularly around Volunteering, Governance, Business Planning, and improving relationships between volunteers, paid staff and trustees.

Neil designed and delivers the "Keeping Yourself And Your Volunteers On The Right Side Of The Law" course.

Neil is chief executive of a voluntary and community sector infrastructure organisation in Yorkshire. Previous jobs have included managing volunteers working with young people, managing volunteers providing social care services and running a volunteer bureau. He is also the chair of the trustees of a regional charity, a trustee of a grant making foundation, and a voluntary ranger in a national park. Neil has postgraduate qualifications in community work and management, and is a member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI).
